The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe has predicted there will be a change in style for Everton over the coming weeks.
What did he say?
Since his arrival last summer Marco Silva has mostly utilised the same 4-2-3-1 formation, and brought in players to fit that system, such as Alex Iwobi and Jean-Philippe Gbamin.
It is a tactic which has had mixed success, and whilst it has improved Everton’s defence, with eight goals conceded in their last ten Premier league games, it has on occasion stifled the attack, with 12 goals scored over the same period.
O’Keeffe believes a change in formation would suit this Silva side, pointing to 4-3-3 as an option which he thinks would be a good solution, and argues that the Portuguese has been working towards it so far this season.
In a Q&A for The Athletic, he said: “I want to see 433 and I think Silva himself prefers it and has been building to it so…watch this space!”
It would not be a drastic change and perhaps only make the Goodison Park outfit more of an attacking threat, which could be necessary to get the best out of strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Moise Kean, who remain goalless this term.
How it would help
There have been signs of a 4-3-3 style in Everton’s recent games, and it would certainly help to make their pressing more effective – an aspect of their game which already proved useful in scoring the opening goal against Wolves.
Depending on the midfield personnel, the formation change could grant more freedom to players like Iwobi and Richarlison, and the Toffees would become more dangerous as a result.
Richarlison proved in the last two matches that he can be a threat, his runs into the box causing havoc and allowing him to score two headers, and that could influence the manager’s decision-making moving forward.

The lack of goals for his main strikers may also be proving troublesome for the 42-year-old, and by playing supporting players in more advanced positions it would give the opposition defence more than just one attacker to worry about, thus creating more space for the central striker.
However, it is important the Toffees don’t surrender their defensive solidity, and that could mean a player like Gylfi Sigurdsson has to be dropped for a more defensive-minded player, but he is coming into form with a goal and assist in his last two games and his creativity could be missed.
Tough decision ahead, then.
