Tammy Abraham has been in electric form thus far this season but he endured one of his worst displays of the season on Saturday as Aston Villa fell to a 2-0 defeat to West Brom.
The Villans striker has scored 20 goals in the Championship this season but he should have added another against the Baggies.
Found by Andre Green in the box, Abraham was unmarked and 12 yards from goal but his first touch was clumsy and goalkeeper Sam Johnstone rushed to his feet and saved.
Goals from Hal Robson-Kanu and Jay Rodriguez ultimately gave the Baggies all three points but it could have been so different if Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, had converted his big chance.
As it was, Abraham was in poor form throughout the game, struggling to make his mark, seemingly seeing his confidence knocked.
Indeed, Abraham managed only one shot on goal in the 90 minutes, his aforementioned miss.
The 21-year-old touched the ball just 29 times throughout the game, the least of any Villa outfield player.
He also attempted just 17 passes, again the fewest of any Villa outfield player who started the game. Abraham also failed to complete a single dribble or a tackle and won just 29% of his aerial battles.
In short, Abraham did not provide a focal point nor a goal threat.
He also failed to score in the game against Brentford, and it is no surprise that Villa lost that game too, 1-0.
In fact, Villa have lost just twice when Abraham has scored this season – against Leeds United in December and Millwall in October.
He is integral to the way that Villa play, they rely on his pace up front and his normally prolific eye for goal.
When he goes missing, as he did against West Brom, Villa’s forward play suffers and, ultimately, they failed to create enough chances to force their way back into the game.
Villa have now gone four games without a win and sit 10th in the Championship.
They are nine points behind the play-offs, and Abraham will need to rediscover his shooting boots if they are to bridge that gap between now and May.
