da jogodeouro: One surprise story of this season, if not the biggest, is the turnaround of Moussa Sissoko’s Tottenham career. The 29-year-old has emerged as a key man for Spurs, taking his chance amidst a barrage of injuries, and he could be just what Mauricio Pochettino needs to beat Arsenal.
How can Sissoko damage Arsenal?
Having predominately played in central midfield for the most part of the current campaign, it may be on the right flank where the France international can cause the most chaos at the Emirates.
As we saw in the latter stages of the recent win against Inter Milan, Sissoko utilised his power to cut through the Italian’s defence in the build-up to Christian Eriksen’s late winner, showcasing how his engine and stamina can come into effect against weary opponents.
Furthermore, it is at left-back, where whoever starts for Arsenal would have to contend with the former Newcastle man, that the Gunners are arguably the weakest. All of Granit Xhaka, Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal have played the role so far this season as Unai Emery struggles to find someone who can hold down the role, which could potentially open up an area for Pochettino to exploit.
Unsettling the Gunners’ left-back
Whilst Son Heung-min is currently excelling on the right hand side, he is equally as adept at coming infield and playing as an inverted forward. Should the South Korean opt to do as such, it is expected that he would drag the Gunners’ left-back inside with him whilst the centre-backs have their hands full with Dele Alli and Harry Kane.
Since Kyle Walker’s departure, Spurs haven’t really seen someone rampage on the overlap as the Englishman used to do. However, if Son can do as aforementioned, an ocean of space will most likely appear for the 6ft 2in Sissoko to vacate his central midfield role and disorganise Emery’s set-up.
If this feature of the game can be implemented effectively early on, Kolasinac – who will presumably start – will need to call either Lucas Torreira or Alex Iwobi over to assist him; amazingly, Sissoko, who looked to be a £30m flop, can now become a game-changing utility man.
